Incident

Users on Android experiencing crashing when mentioning other users.

Issue summary: From August 27, 2024 at 8:30 PM PDT to August 29, 2024 at 11:00 AM PDT, some users were experiencing crashes in Slack for Android. After a thorough investigation, we determined that we were not handling a specific subset of errors efficiently, resulting in app crashes for some users. We rolled out a code change to improve the way we handle these errors, resolving the issue for all affected customers.

Incident

A small number of users experiencing lagging behavior when using mentions on Android

Issue summary: From August 27, 2024, at around 8:17 PM PDT until August 28, 2024, around 1:39 PM PDT, some Android users experienced performance issues while trying to use mentions. We rolled back a feature flag related to the message composer on Android. This change unexpectedly introduced an error in backend logic when users attempted a mention, causing the UI to become overwhelmed and unresponsive. We identified the cause and re-enabled the feature, gradually rolling it out to users and resolving the issue for those affected. We also determined that the app crash issue mentioned in our updates was unrelated to the performance issues. You can review our summary of that incident here: https://slack-status.com/2024-08/459426ecb123c558. We apologize for any confusion.

4:49 PM PST

We've identified the cause of the performance issues and are rolling out a fix in the next app update which is expected to roll out in the coming days. We will continue to work directly with affected users through support tickets. For any additional questions, please contact us at feedback@slack.com. We apologize for any inconvenience.

We'll provide an update once we have news to share. We appreciate your patience while we sort this out. We've adjusted this update to provide additional clarity on the issues.

Brief trouble loading or sending messages

Issue Summary: On August 28, 2024, from 11:13 AM PDT to 11:22 AM PDT, a small percentage of users in the Europe and Asia-Pacific region encountered issues with various actions including connecting to Slack, loading conversations, and sending messages. We detected a spike in error rates which we traced back to an upstream provider conducting unplanned maintenance on a service many core Slack functions rely on. To mitigate user impact, we temporarily diverted traffic from the affected databases. Once the error rates returned to normal and the upstream provider restored functionality, traffic was reverted back to the normal databases. We apologize for any disruption to your work day.
